Fantastic Winter Gardening (meaning of flowers)
By Louanne Baelde
Winter gardening can be so much fun and extremely beneficial as well! Allocate a special space in your garden just for winter gardening.
If you are going to plant a crop following one that you had planted earlier, it’s a good idea to feed the soil before hand. You want to give it the best shot that you can at being successful. Try mixing compost, leaf mulch or manure that is aged to your soil to keep it fertile.
Cool weather vegetables only take about one week to germinate therefore transplants can be started outdoors. It’s best not to transfer them any later than the first week of September. This will allow the plants to develop good roots before the winter time and many upcoming frosts. You can also add compost or organic fertilizer in the hole whenever you go to plant. This will help a lot. Also, good drainage is extremely important.
Many winter plants just naturally reseed themselves year after year. This makes your job much easier and your crops more substantial!
Don’t worry about whether your winter plants can withstand the cold. Remember that this is why they are called winter plants! They naturally pump sugar into their cells that works similar to that of an antifreeze. This is the reason why many winter vegetable plants like kale, leeks and brussel sprouts, do even better and taste much sweeter after frosts. Kale, peas, spinach, beets … are all vegetables that do fantastic in rainy, cooler temperatures.
Garlic can be planted in October in a sunny area. It’s actually thrilling to pull a sweet carrot out of the garden in January or to cut fresh brussel sprouts from the snowy ground in February. Even pretty pansies can often survive in winter.
It is best to provide more space between your plants for winter gardening, than you would normally in the summer time. This provides for better air circulation and then you will have less dampness; less fungus and diseases with your plants. Watch for snails and slugs with your winter gardening. These often prefer dark, damp conditions.
Windbreaks and walls can lengthen the season for your crops.
Don’t forget to brighten up your yards with beautiful colored berries. With the right planning, berry bushes can be enjoyed with their bright red, yellow and pale blue colors and add beauty to the drab winter months. Birds will also love your new winter additions.
The biggest advantage of all with planting winter vegetables is that there is no need for weeding or watering and most of all, no insects!

Writing a Great Flower Note Card
By Amy Nutt
You stare at that tiny card and stress over what to write. Should you be witty? Just sign your name? Simply say, “Congrats!”? It can be really confusing to know just what to put on a flower note card to be included with the bunch of flowers that you’re giving to someone.
Those flower note cards are small, so you really want to make the most of the space that you have. Here are some tips on doing just that.
Skip the name. Unless your flowers will be delivered to an office or anywhere there are a lot of people and the flowers might be mistaken for someone else, save space and don’t write the recipient’s name. The delivery person will be delivering them straight to the recipient in most cases, so it’s not necessary.
Keep it short. There’s nothing worse than straining to read crunched up writing on the edge of the card because the writer ran out of space! Keep in mind that you don’t have much surface area and keep the note short and sweet.
Make it meaningful. Mention something special. For example, if you are giving roses to someone you visited the rose gardens with, you can include that incident in the note, to remind them of the fun times you had together.
Write neatly. If you aren’t good at writing, print the note, instead. The idea is that the recipient can read it and that’s going to be awfully hard to do if you end up writing illegibly. While you can have someone else write the note, it’s best in your own handwriting, since this makes the whole gift that much more special.
Get inspired. Still not sure what to write? Then turn to some poems for inspiration. There are also some amazing quotes out there that can be easily found online and these work particularly well if you are looking at giving a gift for something that could use words of inspiration, such as a promotion or a birthday or even an anniversary.
Mention the special occasion. If you are giving flowers for a special occasion, you’ll want to mention that. Just a quick note is fine “Congrats on the promotion” works well. Of course, adding more information can make the note card more personal and is a good idea.
Add a touch of you. There’s nothing wrong with the standard flower note card, but if you want it to be extra special, why not add your own touch, a tiny doodle or something that you enjoy. If you usually sign letters “XOXO”, then do this on the note card. It will help you be consistent and make the gift that much more personal.
Sign the note. You never know how many bunches of flowers the person will be receiving for this special occasion so be sure to sign your flower note card, or they might not realize who it is from. Unless you wish to remain anonymous, in which case, leave your signature off the card!
What you write on the flower note card will make the flowers mean something. While a bunch of flowers are nice to have, they certainly don’t mean that much unless you know who they came from and why.
Flowers make great gifts, but it’s a good idea to make that note count, too, so be sure you write something special on it! Turn it into something the recipient will want to keep and that will make their heart sing. Following the above tips can help you do just that.

How to Find a Restaurant for Large Groups and Events
By Amy Nutt
Birthdays, anniversaries, retirement parties and even wedding receptions can be difficult events to plan. We want to make sure that the person of honor has a great time and that the party is an occasion to remember. Well, one doesn’t always need to rent out a lavish hall to have a grand celebration. Local restaurants can act as a venue that offers a fun, cozy or sophisticated atmosphere for your private affair.
All well and good you say, but how do you go about finding a suitable restaurant venue?
Online search
Believe it or not, the Internet can be your friend when it comes to locating a restaurant that could also serve as a party venue. The beauty of the internet is that there are literally thousands of businesses, many in your area, that will cater to the needs of you and your guests.
The Internet also offers a plethora of advice via a restaurant guide or two that will make shopping for a happening place to hold your event even easier.
After you have made a top five or ten list of places that may be suitable, call and ask if the establishment hosts private functions. If they do, inquire about the costs.
If the place is local (which it probably should be unless you plan to fly guest to the destination) you can visit the restaurant in question. Make sure the person responsible for party planning will be there during your visit, so you can discuss what you’d like for your affair.
Word of mouth
Word of mouth has always been, and perhaps always will be, the best form of advertisement around. This invaluable tool can act as a restaurant guide that will help you locate a prime location for your special occasion.
If someone you know has recently thrown a party, inquire about the venue that was used. Most any business will tell you they are the best of the best, but friends and family and acquaintances won’t steer you wrong in this regard.
Booking the right restaurant
Ritzy, high class or five star restaurants will require a pretty sizable deposit for the day in question. You may also need to discuss some aspect of your budget with the organizer or planner, so you can realistically see what you can or cannot do. Many restaurants will be willing to work with you to ensure you get precisely what you want. In return, you have to be honest and forthcoming about what you can reasonably afford.
Getting Outside entertainment
If the restaurant doesn’t have regular entertainment, you may consider getting some of your own. If this is one of your goals, make sure the eatery knows as they will have to accommodate you. For example, a bistro may not have a stage area or dance floor in the establishment and would need to move chairs, tables and furniture around for a band.
If you desire to have a band or some sort of live entertainment, then your best bet is to find a restaurant that is already set up for something like of that nature.
Of course, there may be a cafe or tavern that the person or persons of honor really likes that would be the perfect spot to host their function.
Yet and still, you would have to call the establishment to see what the protocols are for securing the place for a private event.
Even though it may seem like a lot of work, finding an online restaurant guide or relying on word of mouth is one way to locate a venue that will add a festive air to the proceedings and make you the quintessential host or hostess to beat when the next big event comes around.
