By Steven Brown

Where flowers bloom so does hope this quotation by Lady Bird Taylor Johnson, one of America’s greatest First Ladies, truly describes the significance of flowers in human lives. Since the first civilization on Earth up till now, humans have used flowers to express feelings and desires that they couldnt express with words. Each flower, depending on its color and fragrance is associated with specific human emotions. A fairer scent

When perusing bouquets at your local florists do you know where the flowers come from? In the UK, most people believe that all of our cut flowers come from Holland, however as more developing countries are delving into the international flower industry, flowers are flying in from all over the globe.

The Canary Islands send Chrysanthemums and roses; Chile, Colombia and Ecuador export carnations; summer flowers usually came from Israel; Orchids from Thailand and the most exotic plants and flowers tend to originate in South Africa. However, in season many of our flowers and plants come from the UK.

10 years ago, many farmers in the developing were being exploited and not paid a fair rate for their goods, meaning flower growing wasn”t feasible. But in 2003/2004, the Fairtrade industry in flowers began to blossom. In 2004, estimated UK sales of Fairtrade flowers were ?4.3 million, fast forward to 2008 and they had reached an impressive ?33.4 million.

Globally, consumers worldwide spent ?1.6 billion on Fairtrade products in 2007, which is a 47% increase on the previous year, which directly benefits 7 million people in 58 developing countries.

Fairtrade is a tool for development in the world’’s poorer countries ensuring famers and workers get a fair deal, equal to that in developed countries. According to the Fairtrade Association, ”Fairtrade is a strategy for poverty alleviation and sustainable development. Its purpose is to create opportunities for producers and workers who have been economically disadvantaged or marginalised by the conventional trading system.”

Basically, a price is agreed between the farmer and the buyer that covers the cost of sustainable production but also pays a fair wage to the farmer and their family. Upon request, producers can apply for a partial pre-payment of the agreed amount so they can better manage cash flow. Buyers on the other hand are encouraged to enter into long-term contracts with farmers so the producers can plan and predict their future income.

What’’s more, Fairtrade standards aim to improve social, economic and environmental development for disadvantaged and marginalised small-scale farmers. It provides a Fairtrade Premium which can be invested in projects that enhance these developments.

If we as consumers commit to only purchasing Fairtrade flowers we can help the developing world get a fair chance at life though encouraging development through business not handouts. Both ends of the flower chain, and all sections in between are equally benefitting.
